5 reasons why as mums we need to practice self care daily and how to actually make that happen

When we hear the words self care we often think of the ‘self care Sunday’ trend, but why are we leaving it to a Sunday only? Why not everyday? Self care doesn't have to be a big event, to me self care are those little daily acts that make the day go from average to amazing. And heres the thing, its those daily little self care slow moments that can make a big difference when it comes to our mental health, stress and resentment.

Here are 5 reasons why as mamas we need to practice self care daily

  • Daily acts of self love sends a message to yourself that you are worthy, which in turn helps to build self esteem, confidence and self love. You are showing a commitment to yourself.

  • Self care helps relieve tension and stress that if otherwise not addressed could lead to overwhelm, resentment and persistent stress causing illness and unease

  • Emotional regulation. Acts of self love and self care help you to better manage your emotions, so when your kids throw all their toys around the house or spill the entire milk carton you are less likely to react in a harsh, screaming, negative way.

  • Builds self trust. You are showing yourself that you can rely on yourself for support, comfort and love. You don't need anyone else to do that because you've got your own back.

  • Respect! Self care shows you respect and love yourself enough to know you deserve more. It also sets the example of how you want others to treat you and show you respect.

Try this activity

List 8-10 things that bring you joy each day, little acts of self care that amongst the wildness of mum's life bring you joy. They don't need to be big acts like a massage or facial, just little things that help make the day go from ok to amazing. And try to add in a few of them everyday.

Then list 8-10 things you'd love to do less of that dont bring your joy or promote self care

  • Some of mine that bring me joy

  • A candle light shower

  • A coffee outside in the sun

  • Going to the gym

  • A bath

  • Setting the girls up with an activity like painting so I can have 5 min of peace

  • Putting music on and having a dance while making breakfast

  • Taking a deep breath before I react

  • Buying myself a coffee and going for a drive with a podcast for 15 min while Charli sleeps

  • Wearing clothes that make me feel good

  • Putting the oil diffuser on with a beautiful oil

Some of mine that I try to do less of

  • Eating on the run

  • Not making a proper meal and just eating kids leftovers

  • Putting off exercise for kids activities

  • Not making time for connecting with friends

  • Wearing clothes that don’t make me feel good about myself

  • Rushing

  • Scrolling on social media

How's your self care?

What do you love to do?

This is a really good checklist to have once you have done the above activity listing 8-10 things that bring you joy each day, to keep yourself accountable and actually track if you are giving yourself some love each day. And also, just to see where the gaps are in your day, where can you make changes to your day so that you can reduce stress, overwhelm and start loving each day just that little bit more. Grab your FREE self care check list here, you can use some of mine that I have aded to the list or create your own. Give yourself some love.
